Exhibition Brochure – Lace for the Popes
This beautifully presented brochure accompanies the exhibition Lace for the Popes, offering a unique glimpse into a rarely seen part of Vatican history. It features a dozen handwritten quires from the archives of the Apostolic Chamber of the Papal State, documenting the purchase of lace for various uses.
These include:
Liturgical linens such as corporals and foot-washing towels for Maundy Thursday
Personal items for the popes, including handkerchiefs, pillowcases, and more
Many documents are still sealed with red wax and include original lace samples, making them rare and precious historical records.
These never-before-seen documents reveal fascinating details about papal life and taste in the early 18th century, while also highlighting the influence and reach of the Flanders lace trade among Europe’s noble and ecclesiastical courts.
